- Enameled Coronation Beaker of Czar
Enameled Coronation Beaker of Czar Nicholas II The so-called ''Bloody Cup.'' Enamel over copper c. 4.25'' tall the ground of white with the body decorated in repeating strapwork patterns of red and blue; the front with a large plaque with the crowned cipher of Nicholas and Alexandra with a smaller plaque below bearing the date ''1896 '' and the rear with Black Imperial Russian eagle. Manufactured as a state souvenir for the royal coronation these cups were given as free gifts to peasants attending the festivities at the Khodinka Fields near Moscow. As carts of the cups began arriving at the celebration a rumor grew that there would not be enough to go around. A panic ensued and hundreds lost their lives trampled beneath the frantic crowds seeking a cup. The incident cast a pall on the coronation festivities and over the years the beaker acquired the name the ''Bloody Cup.'' Condition: Losses to gilding and enamels.
